Team Hollard Jacana has the wind behind it as it sails into 2017. Last week it claimed first place overall in its division in the first Lufthansa Twilight Series of eight races held at the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) in Cape Town.

The team has won the RCYC club championships three years in a row and is aiming to do so again.

“It’s always satisfying to win a series,” says skipper Patrick Holloway. “Not only because they count towards the RCYC club championships, but because a series win, let alone two in a row, reflects that the crew have sailed consistently well over a period of months. The real benefit, however, is that it gives our sponsor, Hollard, great coverage.”Team Hollard Jacana smiling with a trophy

The crew, the reigning RCYC Division One (Spinnaker) champions, have won in their division in the first of the two scheduled Harken Round Robben Island Races, the Drifter Brewing Company Winter Series and the Lufthansa Twilight Series. The Lufthansa series comprises eight races over November and December. A second Lufthansa Twilight Series of another eight races kicks off in January and continues to March.

This is the third year Hollard Insurance has sponsored Hollard Jacana. “We are thrilled with their ongoing successes and excited to see what they do in the new year,” says Frank Ponnen, MD of Hollard Marine. “The team has been dedicated and enthusiastic, and our relationship with them has given us great coverage.”

Holloway says Hollard’s financial contribution towards the running costs of Hollard Jacana’s campaign “has made the difference between the team being competitors and being winners”.

The Lufthansa Twilight Series is the club’s most popular, says RCYC sailing manager Toni Mainprize. “There are more than 80 boats taking part and it happens on a Wednesday after work, at twilight. It’s a good, fun, social event.”

Team Hollard Jacana is signed up for the Maserati Cape Town Race Week from 15 to 20 December.

The team, with Hollard representatives, including Mark Molenaar and Estelle Bond aboard, also finished second overall in the RISKAFRICA Regatta in October.

Of the eight races in the first Lufthansa Twilight Series, three were “blown out” – the wind was too heavy. Hollard Jacana had podium finishes in the other five races, says Holloway. It finished first twice, second once and third twice.

On the final podium with Hollard Jacana in Division One were Windpower (second) and Nitro (third). A total of 91 yachts participated in the series.
