The four remaining contestants facing surprise task number six were warned from the outset that this was going to be “the toughest” assignment in the reality show-style competition’s history. The contest, produced by the industry magazine FA News, aims to attract young, fresh talent to the industry. Hollard is a Gold sponsor of The Insurance Apprentice.

The judges asked the apprentices – Kabelo Paile of Santam, Kurt Stanley of Associated Insurance Brokers, Mutoda Mahamba of MMI Holdings and Nick Kadima of Lombard – to consider the proposal by the Financial Services Board (FSB) that commercial binders be prohibited.

In drawing up their proposals, the contestants had to consult with a range of stakeholders and draw up presentations, suggesting ways forward in dealing with an issue that has been vexing the industry and the FSB for years.

Summarising their efforts, guest judge Caroline da Silva, deputy executive officer of the FSB, said all the contestants did “extremely well”.

She told them: “You all had meaningful stakeholder engagement, which gave you a good understanding of the issue. For me, the presentations that struck a cord were those that were quite solution-focused.”

Judge Vuyo Lee, an independent insurance consultant, pointed out there were two “clear frontrunners” – but the winner will only be named in a few weeks’ time. Watch this space!
